ASUU to Begin Two-Week Warning Strike On Monday Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to begin a two-week warning strike starting Monday after the expiration of its two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government.

The union’s decision comes after the government failed to address its long-standing demands before the Sunday night deadline. These demands include unpaid allowances, poor funding of universities, and the failure to implement parts of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement.

Sources within the union revealed that branches across the country had already been directed to prepare for the industrial action in case the government failed to act.Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said discussions were ongoing with ASUU and other unions to prevent the strike.

He noted that the government had released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances and included ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget to address university needs over three phases.

Alausa added that promotion arrears, wage awards, and other allowances were being processed and assured that all pending payments would be cleared before 2026. He appealed to the union to continue with dialogue and avoid another strike that could affect the academic calendar.

However, ASUU leaders argue that the government’s promises are repetitive and lack concrete action. They maintain that the planned strike is intended to push the government toward real progress rather than empty assurances.

The outcome of the ongoing discussions will determine whether the strike proceeds or if both sides can reach an agreement to keep academic activities running across public universities.
