ADC Accuses APC of Trying to Turn Nigeria into a One-Party State

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to make Nigeria a one-party state following the recent defections of the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa States.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the defections confirm its warning that President Bola Tinubu and the APC are bent on consolidating absolute political control at the expense of democracy.

The party described the defecting governors’ actions as a betrayal of the people who voted them into power under opposition parties, alleging that they have chosen personal gain over public interest. It claimed that the defections are part of a broader plan by the ruling party to weaken democratic opposition and silence dissent.

The ADC stated that many Nigerians are already facing hardship caused by poor governance under the APC, adding that citizens no longer have confidence in the government due to rising insecurity, unemployment, and inflation.

It argued that the administration has failed to deliver on basic responsibilities such as economic management, healthcare, and anti-corruption efforts.According to the party, opposition parties are meant to represent the people’s hope when the government fails, but the defecting governors have abandoned this duty.

The ADC accused them of joining what it called a political alliance that neglects the welfare of Nigerians.It also said the defections have made it clearer who is working to rescue the nation and who is pursuing selfish ambitions.

The ADC expressed confidence that Nigerians will hold political leaders accountable in the 2027 general elections, which it described as a battle between the people and the ruling party.
