Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has officially announced his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Lamido made his declaration on Monday through a post on his verified Facebook page, where he revealed his plan to visit the PDP national headquarters in Abuja to obtain the nomination form for the position.

The former governor, who also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, said his decision to run was driven by his desire to rebuild the party and restore its strength ahead of the coming general elections. He reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the PDP back to its past prominence.

The PDP, which ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is set to elect a new National Chairman during its national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, between November 15 and 16, 2025.

Lamido’s declaration comes at a time when internal disagreements have emerged within the party over the choice of a consensus candidate. Some northern PDP leaders had earlier endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as their preferred candidate, but Lamido and allies of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike have rejected the endorsement, saying it did not reflect broad consultation.
The disagreement points to growing tension within the party as it prepares for the 2027 elections. The PDP’s National Executive Committee had earlier resolved to zone its presidential ticket to the South, while the position of National Chairman was reserved for the North.
Ahead of the convention, the PDP has named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee led by former Ondo State governorship candidate Eyitayo Jegede to screen aspirants for national offices. The exercise is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in Abuja.
Lamido’s entry into the race adds a new twist to the contest for leadership of the opposition party as it seeks unity and renewed strength before the next election cycle.
