PDP postpones screening of aspirants for 2025 national convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

The decision was announced on Monday in a statement by the Chairman of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.

According to the statement, the exercise was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, and a new date will be announced soon.Fintiri explained that the party regretted any inconvenience the postponement might cause, adding that all aspirants and members would be informed once a new schedule is confirmed.

He assured that the committee remains committed to organising a credible and transparent convention.The screening exercise, which was meant to assess candidates vying for national offices within the party, was to be conducted by a 13-member committee chaired by Eyitayo Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Ondo State governorship candidate.

PDP had earlier fixed its 2025 National Convention for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where delegates will elect new national leaders.The postponement comes shortly after former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, declared his intention to run for the position of National Chairman.

His announcement followed reports that northern PDP leaders had endorsed former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki as their preferred candidate, a move that has sparked internal disagreements among party factions.

Several stakeholders, including groups loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, insisting that the selection process lacked proper consultation.

The division reflects growing tension within the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.The party leadership has urged members to remain calm and patient while it resolves internal issues and finalises arrangements for the rescheduled screening exercise.
