Ten individuals appeared before a Paris criminal court on Monday over allegations of online harassment targeting Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. The case centers on a wave of online abuse linked to false claims about the first lady’s gender.

The defendants — eight men and two women aged between 41 and 60 — are accused of posting and sharing offensive comments about Brigitte Macron’s gender and sexuality on social media. According to court details, some of the posts went as far as making derogatory comparisons between her marriage and “paedophilia,” referencing the 24-year age difference between her and President Macron.

The case follows a defamation lawsuit the presidential couple filed in the United States in July, after rumors circulated online alleging that Brigitte Macron was born male. The baseless claims, which have been spreading in France and abroad for years, prompted her to file a formal complaint in August 2024. This led to an investigation into cyber-harassment and subsequent arrests between December 2024 and February 2025.

Brigitte Macron was not present in court as the trial began. Among those facing charges is 41-year-old Aurelien Poirson-Atlan, a publicist who is also known online as Zoe Sagan and has been connected to conspiracy circles on social media.
If found guilty, the accused could each face a prison sentence of up to two years. Brigitte Macron’s lawyer has not commented on the ongoing proceedings.
