Edo Govt Orders Ex-Deputy Governor to Return State Property Within One Week

The Edo State Government has given former deputy governor, Godwin Omobayo, one week to return all government assets still in his possession.

The directive was issued on Tuesday by Governor Monday Okpebholo through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua. According to the statement, Omobayo has failed to hand over several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other government property assigned to him during his short time in office.

Omobayo was sworn in on April 8, 2024, by Chief Judge Daniel Okungbowa after his nomination by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, following a fallout with the then deputy governor, Phillip Shaibu. However, Shaibu was later reinstated by the state House of Assembly, rendering Omobayo’s tenure invalid.

The government stated that the retention of any state property after leaving office amounts to unlawful possession and a breach of public trust. Omobayo was therefore given seven days to return all assets to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

The statement added that if he fails to comply, the Commissioner of Police will be directed to arrest him and recover the items through lawful means.

Governor Okpebholo’s administration reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, due process, and protection of public property, noting that no individual—regardless of past position or political ties—will be allowed to hold onto assets belonging to the people of Edo State.

The government urged Omobayo to comply with the directive to avoid further legal action or embarrassment.
