The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff following his screening at the National Assembly in Abuja.

The confirmation came shortly after General Olufemi Oluyede was cleared as the Chief of Defence Staff, as part of the Senate’s consideration of President Bola Tinubu’s recently appointed service chiefs.

The session took place under tight security, with both open and closed-door meetings held to assess the nominees. Presiding over the sitting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the confirmation process was part of the Senate’s duty to ensure capable officers are appointed to manage the country’s security affairs.

Shaibu, who was directed to take office immediately after confirmation, received strong support from lawmakers, including Senator Isah Jubrin from Kogi East, who vouched for his integrity and professionalism.
The approval of Shaibu and Oluyede signals the Senate’s readiness to accelerate the confirmation of all new service chiefs nominated by President Tinubu. This development marks another step in the government’s plan to strengthen Nigeria’s security leadership and address ongoing national security challenges.
