The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that eight political associations have completed the first phase of registration to become political parties in Nigeria. The update was shared on Thursday, October 30, 2025, in a statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

According to the statement, the progress was reviewed during the commission’s regular meeting, where officials examined updates since the last report in September. Out of 14 associations that were initially pre-qualified for the process, eight successfully met the initial requirements by submitting all necessary documents before the October 18 deadline through the commission’s online portal.

The groups that completed this stage are the All Democratic Alliance, Citizens Democratic Alliance, Abundance Social Party, African Alliance Party, Democratic Leadership Alliance, Green Future Party, National Democratic Party, and Peoples Freedom Party.

The commission explained that the next phase would involve a detailed verification of the documents submitted by each association. This verification aims to ensure that the groups comply with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
INEC also reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining transparency and openness in the registration process while promoting wider participation in Nigeria’s democratic system.
The commission revealed that it had earlier received 171 letters of intent from different groups seeking registration as political parties, out of which only 14 made it to the initial screening stage.
