Fresh Crisis in PDP as Anyanwu’s Faction Suspends Damagum and Names Abdulrahman Acting Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a new phase of internal crisis as two factions within its leadership announced separate suspensions of top members. The division deepened on Saturday in Abuja, where one group led by the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, declared that the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and several others had been suspended for alleged incompetence, financial irregularities, and disregard for legal rulings.

The faction, said to have the backing of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, appointed Mohammed Abdulrahman, the party’s National Vice Chairman for North Central, as Acting National Chairman. The group also announced the suspension of the National Publicity Secretary, the Deputy National Vice Chairman (South), the National Financial Secretary, the National Youth Leader, and the Deputy National Secretary, stating that they would all face the party’s disciplinary committee.

However, in a quick reaction, the National Working Committee under Damagum’s control also announced the suspension of Anyanwu, the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), and two other members.

This latest development marks another chapter in the long-running power tussle within the PDP, which has been battling leadership instability in recent years. Both factions have continued to make counterclaims over the control of the party’s national structure, leaving uncertainty over its leadership and future direction.

The ongoing crisis has further divided members and raised concerns about the party’s preparedness ahead of future elections, as its leaders remain locked in disputes over authority and legitimacy.
