Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has reacted to the suspension of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Umar Damagum, describing it as a necessary step for the revival of the party. He expressed support for Mohammed Abdulrahman, who was appointed as the acting national chairman following Damagum’s suspension.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, Fayose said the PDP had lost direction under Damagum’s leadership, describing the party as weak and divided. He said the emergence of Abdulrahman offers a chance for renewal and urged him to restore unity and credibility within the party.

Fayose said Damagum’s leadership faced internal conflicts similar to those experienced during the tenure of former chairman, Iyorchia Ayu. According to him, the party had been on the brink of collapse, with several of its members defecting to other political groups.

He accused the Damagum-led National Working Committee of worsening the party’s crisis through confusion and internal suspensions, noting that the situation left the PDP unstable and disorganized. Fayose added that Damagum’s rise to leadership was through manipulation and that his removal was overdue.
The former governor, however, said he believes Abdulrahman can bring change if given full support by party members. He encouraged the new acting chairman to fix issues within state chapters, ensure due process in congresses, and prepare for the national convention.
Fayose expressed confidence that the court would affirm Abdulrahman’s leadership, adding that this would help stabilize the party and restore order after months of internal tension.
