A protest broke out on Monday at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja as supporters of the faction loyal to the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the Wadata Plaza demanding the immediate exit of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Umar Damagum.

The demonstrators, who arrived in large numbers, sang solidarity songs and blocked the entrance of the secretariat. Their protest followed the declaration of Abdulrahman as the Acting National Chairman of the PDP last week, a development that deepened the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party.

The dispute has already led to the suspension of key officials, including the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for one month. The protesters accused the Damagum-led NWC of mismanaging party affairs and declared their support for Abdulrahman’s leadership.

Meanwhile, another faction loyal to Senator Anyanwu held a separate meeting in Abuja where they reportedly suspended members of the Damagum-led NWC. Both groups are claiming control of the party’s leadership, creating tension within the PDP.
Security operatives were stationed around the party’s national secretariat to prevent any breakdown of order as the two rival factions faced off. The situation caused temporary disruption in the area, with onlookers gathering to witness the heated standoff.
The leadership crisis, which has persisted for months, continues to threaten the unity of the PDP as factions battle for dominance and control of the party’s structure ahead of future political activities.
