Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has taken legal action against the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Lagos State Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh, demanding ₦500 million in damages for allegedly violating his fundamental rights.

The suit, filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeks to enforce Sowore’s rights to dignity, liberty, and freedom of movement as provided by the 1999 Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Sowore, represented by lawyers Tope Temokun, Marshal Abubakar, Inibehe Effiong, and Deji Adeyanju, claimed that the Lagos Commissioner of Police wrongfully declared him wanted on November 3, 2025, without a formal invitation, warrant, or charge.

In his affidavit, the activist said the declaration tarnished his image as a journalist and citizen who had not been accused of any crime. He asked the court to nullify the declaration and restrain the police and their agents from further harassing or arresting him.
Sowore also requested an interim order to stop any further intimidation or threats from the police until the case is concluded, insisting that the declaration was an attempt to silence his activism and abuse his constitutional rights.
