Former Governor of old Anambra State and one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jim Nwobodo, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to play a stronger role in restoring the unity and strength of the party.
Nwobodo made the appeal on Friday during the inauguration of the PDP’s new Board of Trustees (BoT) at Wike’s official residence in Life Camp, Abuja. The elder statesman, who is the oldest member of the party, said Wike’s leadership and dedication are vital to the PDP’s revival and long-term survival.
He urged the minister to use his influence and experience to help reconcile aggrieved members and bring them back to the party. Nwobodo also appealed to the party’s leaders to establish a reconciliation committee that would actively reach out to members who had left but still believe in the PDP’s values and constitution.
The former governor described the PDP as the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy and compared its legacy to that of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC). He noted that many politicians currently in other political parties started their political journey in the PDP, which he described as the “mother party” of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
Nwobodo revealed that some former members had contacted him, expressing interest in returning, but were waiting for the party’s leadership to reach out. He urged current leaders to act with openness and forgiveness, saying that restoring the PDP to its past strength would require unity and renewed commitment.
Reflecting on his recent visit to Abuja, Nwobodo commended the visible transformation of the city under Wike’s supervision, saying that similar dedication applied to the PDP could help rebuild the party. He encouraged members to remain patient and determined, noting that true progress often takes time and persistence.
He ended his message with a call for unity and cooperation among all members, stressing that the efforts and sacrifices of the founding fathers must not be forgotten as the PDP works toward reclaiming its position as a leading political force in the country.
