Movement across the Niger Bridge in Onitsha came to a standstill on Saturday as security operatives blocked the bridge during the Anambra governorship election, causing a massive traffic jam that left vehicles and trucks stranded for several hours.

The lockdown, according to officials, was part of security measures aimed at restricting movement and ensuring the safe transport of election materials across the state. However, the restriction created long lines of stationary trucks loaded with goods, leading to frustration among drivers and passengers trapped on the busy route.

Despite the heavy congestion in Onitsha, election activities continued across most parts of Anambra. Officials were deployed to more than 5,000 polling units spread across the 21 local government areas, where voting went on without major interruption.

In Aguata Local Government Area, particularly at Nkwo Igboukwu, some residents were seen trading early in the day despite the movement restrictions. Market leaders later ordered traders to close shops to enable citizens to cast their votes.
Tension remained high on the Onitsha Bridge as stranded motorists complained about the prolonged gridlock. Security personnel, however, kept the barricades in place to maintain order and prevent unauthorized movement during the election period.
The restriction, though intended to ensure peace and safety, caused discomfort for many commuters and business owners who were stuck for hours on one of the state’s busiest routes.
