Abuja, Nigeria – The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has appealed to multiple foreign countries and international organizations for help in securing the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody in Nigeria since June 2021.

The group sent letters to 21 foreign diplomatic missions and international bodies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Russia, China, Israel, Japan, South Korea, South Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, the United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and the International Criminal Court. IPOB called on these entities to intervene in what it described as an urgent humanitarian situation.

The letters drew attention to Kanu’s continued detention, claiming that his health has worsened during his time in custody. The group asked for immediate action to ensure his well-being and urged that court orders related to his release be followed.
