Kano Lawmakers Endorse Barau for 2027 Governorship Race

Some serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday backed the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, for the 2027 governorship race in Kano. The endorsement took place during a courtesy visit to Barau, involving lawmakers who have served in the Assembly from 1999 to the present day. The delegation was led by a former Speaker, Abdulaziz G. Gafasa.

Details of the meeting were shared in a statement released by the media aide to the Deputy President of the Senate, Ismail Mudashir. The lawmakers described Barau as a strong option for the All Progressives Congress in the state and said his work in the National Assembly over the past ten years has earned him growing support from key figures within the party.

Barau, who is currently a ranking senator and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, has not yet announced his intention to run. However, many APC stakeholders across Kano have been rallying behind him due to projects and interventions linked to him in the three senatorial districts of the state. They said his contributions to communities and support for party members have built trust among politicians from different zones, even those outside his district.

During the visit, Gafasa told Barau that their support was based on the positive impact he has had on various parts of Kano. He noted that his work has helped individuals and communities and has strengthened the party at a time when unity is needed ahead of the next election cycle.

A serving member of the Assembly, Garba Yau Gwarmai from Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency, also spoke at the meeting. He said they plan to mobilise support for Barau at the grassroots level in 2027 because of the development projects and interventions he has carried out over the years. He said Barau’s contributions in different sectors have made many lawmakers want him to lead the state.

In his response, Barau thanked them and called for unity among party members. He said Kano needs collective effort to rebuild its structure and restore the better days the state once enjoyed. He described the lawmakers as politicians with strong grassroots influence and urged them to continue promoting the values of the APC and supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu. He said the state must work together to overcome what he described as poor leadership affecting its growth.

Barau said he was encouraged by their visit and asked them to stay committed to the goal of improving the state. He urged them to work as a team to protect the future of Kano and ensure the state does not remain in what he called a difficult phase.
