Tinubu Only Pursues Land Seizures, Bloated Loans and Wike’s Political Disorder — Sowore

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday accused President Bola Tinubu of paying attention to the wrong issues while the country faces rising insecurity, economic hardship and growing public anger. Sowore, who once ran for president under the African Action Congress, made the claim in a post on his X account and linked the situation to what he described as poor leadership.

Sowore said the president is more interested in land matters, new loans and political plans for the 2027 elections than in fixing the challenges affecting Nigerians. He also accused the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, of playing a role in political moves meant to cause tension. According to him, the present state of the country shows that the government is not paying real attention to the suffering of citizens.

The activist’s comments came at a time when Nigerians are struggling with higher food prices, rising inflation and concerns about safety in many parts of the country. Civil society groups and opposition figures have also spoken about the hardship more frequently in recent months.

Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has introduced economic reforms funded mostly by increased borrowing. Government officials say the loans are needed to keep the economy running and complete major projects. Many critics, however, argue that the debt is growing without clear improvements in electricity, health care, education and other important areas. This has led to doubts about how the borrowed money is used.

Sowore also touched on the ongoing disputes over land in Abuja. Under Wike, the FCT administration has carried out several demolitions and reclaimed lands said to be in violation of the city’s master plan. While Wike maintains that the actions are meant to restore order, opponents say the steps appear political and affect people who have little power to defend themselves. There have also been accusations that revoked plots were later given to associates of the minister.

Some opposition groups believe Wike has become a key player in political strategies ahead of the 2027 elections. This belief formed a part of Sowore’s claim that he is being used to create confusion in the country’s capital.

Sowore, who has criticised past administrations and the present one, repeated his call for a change in leadership, a demand that other activists and civic groups have also made. They say the government has lost touch with the hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians and is failing to address the issues that matter most.
