Peter Obi has warned that the recent court decision against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, may deepen tension across the country instead of bringing peace. He said the case has come at a very difficult time when Nigerians are already facing serious economic problems and rising insecurity.

He stated that the arrest and long detention of Kanu were avoidable and described the situation as a failure of leadership. According to him, the issues raised by Kanu were not new and could have been addressed through discussion and proper engagement instead of force.

Obi criticized the government’s approach, saying that the use of force should only come after all peaceful options have been tried. He added that in this case, proper dialogue was not fully carried out before the authorities acted.

He called on national leaders, including the Presidency, the Council of State and respected elders, to step in and help calm the situation. He urged them to work towards unity, peace and fairness in handling national problems.
Earlier in the week, the Federal High Court in Abuja found Nnamdi Kanu guilty on seven terrorism-related charges. Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment on five of the charges and gave him 20 years in prison for belonging to a banned group. He also received five years in jail for bringing in a radio transmitter without approval.
The court based its decision on Kanu’s activities, including his broadcasts, sit-at-home orders in the South-East, and alleged involvement in violence, killings of security officers and destruction of public facilities.
