The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has called on party leaders in the region to engage with the APC governors and meet with President Bola Tinubu to review the appointment of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as the party’s national chairman. The demand comes amid tensions over the possible defection of Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

The Forum urged the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, along with APC governors in Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger States, to work with the Progressive Governors Forum to request a review of Yilwatda’s position. The call follows disagreements within Plateau State APC, where party executives rejected Mutfwang’s potential defection and organized a stakeholders’ meeting in October to oppose it. The women’s wing of the party also held a rally in Jos to reject his entry into the APC.

The North-Central APC Forum alleged that Yilwatda, who hails from Plateau, has been sponsoring protests and media campaigns against Mutfwang’s move to join the party. The group stated that Yilwatda’s opposition is tied to his ambition to contest the Plateau governorship in 2027, noting that his actions undermine the party’s growth in the state and could weaken the region’s prospects for future national appointments.

The Forum argued that the national chairman should not interfere in ward-level decisions regarding party membership and that his focus should be on leading the party instead of blocking defections that could strengthen APC. They warned that Yilwatda’s continued approach could create a disadvantage for the North-Central zone in future national considerations.
The group further congratulated Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma on his appointment as Director-General for Party Outreach, Engagement, and Mobilisation, noting that the position provides an opportunity to support APC’s growth and advocate for a review of the national chairman’s appointment. The Forum also cautioned that paying women to stage protests against Mutfwang’s defection could increase security risks for them.
The North-Central APC Forum called for urgent intervention by party leaders to ensure that the national chairman’s role is aligned with the party’s interests rather than personal ambitions and to allow the APC in Plateau to benefit from Mutfwang’s defection.
