Timipre Sylva, a former petroleum minister, has written to the EFCC asking for a new date to appear before the anti-graft agency over a $14.8 million fraud allegation. He explained that he could not attend immediately because he was undergoing urgent medical care for a serious health condition.

In the letter addressed to the EFCC chairman, Sylva stated that he had never avoided any lawful invitation in the past. He expressed concern over the decision to declare him wanted, saying he had always been available whenever officially invited.

He also said he was consulting his doctors to know if he could pause his treatment and attend the meeting in person. According to him, the aim of the investigation should be to look into the claims fairly, as he denied the allegations made against him.

Sylva recalled that he had honoured a similar invitation from the EFCC in December 2024 regarding the same matter, after which he was granted administrative bail and told he would be contacted again if necessary. He said no further communication was sent to him after that, making the public declaration of him as wanted shocking.
He also rejected claims that he jumped bail, stating that no bail condition was broken. He added that recent events had caused tension for him and his family, including a military raid on his Abuja home where aides and domestic staff were arrested and are still in detention.
Sylva further stated that the situation was creating a public feeling of political persecution, noting that he had been under pressure since the start of the current administration. He has also been linked to rumours of an attempted military coup, which his media aide denied, describing the claims as false and driven by political rivals.
