Nigeria has returned to the Council of the International Maritime Organisation after being away for 14 years. The country secured a seat in Category C for the 2026–2027 term during the organisation’s General Assembly held in London on Friday, November 28.

The announcement was made on Saturday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu. The President welcomed the development and said the outcome showed that the global maritime community still trusts Nigeria’s role in shipping administration and ocean governance.

Tinubu said the new mandate matches his administration’s plan to grow the blue economy, improve maritime facilities, strengthen the fight against sea crime, and build Nigeria into a stronger regional hub for shipping. He added that the country is prepared to work with other IMO members to support safer waterways, cleaner environments, and better transport systems across the world.

The President praised the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, officials of the ministry, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and the country’s diplomats for the work they put into the election process.
He also thanked member states that backed Nigeria and promised that the country will make full use of the opportunity by playing an active part in shaping global maritime policies.
