The Edo State Government on December 2, 2025, responded to accusations from the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The party had accused the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo of going after former Governor Godwin Obaseki by removing or altering his projects. The PDP said the moves looked like retaliation dressed up as governance.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, denied the claims in a long statement. He said the PDP had no basis to attack the government because the party was still dealing with internal problems that started when Obaseki moved into the party in 2020. Afegbua explained that Obaseki’s entry created different groups inside the party and weakened its unity. He said the former governor relied on the PDP platform to win re-election but later fell out with key members who helped him during the campaign.

Afegebua said several PDP leaders who once worked together became divided as new groups formed across the state. According to him, the party has been struggling to regain order since then, and some members now speak out in frustration. He also dismissed claims that Obaseki left behind strong achievements. He argued that many of the projects mentioned by the PDP exist only in announcements, while the physical locations show neglect.

He pointed to the Benin Enterprise Park project as an example, saying the land is unused and overgrown. He also accused the previous administration of leaving behind bad roads that residents still struggle with every day. He said people who benefited from Obaseki’s time in office now defend him out of loyalty, even though many parts of the state remain in poor shape.
Afegbua insisted that the Okpebholo-led administration has started working on the areas that were left unattended. He said the government is fixing old roads and tackling the infrastructure problems that piled up in the past eight years. According to him, those who oppose these efforts do so because they do not want the public to know how much damage was done before the current government came in.
He concluded that the present administration will continue its work despite criticism from groups within the PDP.
