A group of former Nigerian lawmakers has disowned a lawsuit seeking to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), calling the case fraudulent and unauthorized. The suit, filed at the Federal High Court, is said to have been initiated by individuals claiming to represent former legislators without proper mandate.

The former lawmakers stated that they had no knowledge of the court action and warned that the suit misrepresents the views of the thousands of people who have served in Nigeria’s National Assembly since 1999. They argued that no meeting, vote, or authorization had taken place to support the case and criticized the individuals behind it as impostors.

Among those accused is Hon. Nnanna Igbokwe, who has presented himself as the National Coordinator of the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL). The former legislators said his leadership and executive committee were never recognized or elected by legitimate former lawmakers, describing their actions as self-serving and misleading.

The group also claimed that the lawsuit might be secretly backed by some political actors, including figures within the House of Representatives and government officials in Abuja. They warned that such efforts could undermine multiparty democracy in Nigeria and push the country toward a one-party system.
The former lawmakers urged the judiciary to reject the suit, describing it as a waste of judicial time and a misrepresentation of the views of former legislators. They reaffirmed their commitment to a vibrant multiparty system, the protection of opposition parties, and respect for legislative institutions.
The statement was signed by several former lawmakers, including Hon. Linus Okorie, Hon. Mohammed Soba, Hon. Nnenna Elendu Ukeje, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, Hon. Tom Zakari, Hon. Bassey Ewah, Hon. Aminu Shehu Shagari, Hon. Chika Adamu, and others.
