Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday accused Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies of turning away from their main duty and going after opposition figures for political reasons. The statement was released by his media office in Abuja after the arrest and detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

Atiku said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had lost public trust by acting based on political interest instead of evidence. He claimed the arrest of Malami followed a pattern where the agency focused on those who were not aligned with the ruling party while leaving out others with similar allegations.

He argued that the agency had become a tool used to push politicians toward the ruling All Progressives Congress. According to him, once they join the party, their cases appear to fade away. He mentioned former governors who had unresolved corruption cases but were given roles in government without objection from the EFCC.

Atiku stated that he found it strange that the agency became more active shortly after the African Democratic Congress grew into a stronger opposition group. He also noted that Malami and former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal were being targeted at the same time, while cases involving allies of the ruling party were ignored.
He said that if Malami had moved to the APC, he believed the anti-graft agency would not have gone after him. Atiku warned that no real fight against corruption could work if institutions were influenced by politics instead of law.
