Supporters of Peter Obi within the Labour Party are weighing their options following growing talks that the former Anambra State governor may exit the party ahead of the 2027 general election. Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had earlier declared his intention to contest again on the party’s platform.

However, information gathered in Abuja suggests that plans are progressing for Obi to seek another political platform due to unresolved leadership disputes within the Labour Party. Party insiders linked to the Nenadi Usman-led faction, which is backed by Governor Alex Otti and Obi, say the situation within the party has remained unstable despite hopes for internal resolution.

Some loyal members believe Obi is facing pressure from close supporters and advisers to move on, as his political appeal cuts across party lines. They fear that his departure could leave behind those who worked to build the Labour Party into a strong third force during the 2023 elections, especially as many had planned to contest elective positions on the platform in 2027.

The uncertainty has also been linked to mixed signals over alliances with other parties. While some Labour Party candidates are contesting elections under the African Democratic Congress platform, Obi has been seen supporting such candidates, adding to confusion about the party’s direction. At the same time, discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party are said to have failed to produce results.
Despite these developments, Obi is reported to have maintained support for the Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party faction, holding on to the belief that the Independent National Electoral Commission could still take steps that may stabilise the party.
Reacting to the reports, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, dismissed claims that Obi was preparing to leave the Labour Party. He described the talks as rumours and said opposition leaders were working together to challenge the ruling party ahead of future elections. He added that recent joint actions by opposition figures showed ongoing efforts to build unity across party lines.
