The Kwara State House of Assembly on Thursday suspended Saba Gideon, the lawmaker representing Edu State Constituency, for three months over actions linked to a private meeting of the House. The decision followed claims that the lawmaker secretly recorded a closed-door session and later shared the audio with a person who was not permitted to receive such information.

The issue was raised during plenary, where members said Gideon admitted to making the recording when the matter was discussed openly on the floor of the House. Lawmakers described the action as contempt of the Assembly and a violation of legislative privilege.

The motion for suspension was moved by the Leader of the House, Abdulkadir Magaji, who relied on provisions of the House Rules on Privileges and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act, 2017. He stated that the act exposed internal legislative matters and placed the Assembly at risk.

Several members of the House spoke in support of the motion, agreeing that the recording and circulation of a private meeting could damage the integrity of the legislature. They maintained that disciplinary action was necessary to protect the institution.
After deliberations, the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, announced the resolution, stating that the lawmaker’s conduct amounted to contempt and a breach of the House’s privileges. The Assembly directed the suspended member to submit a written apology within the three-month suspension period.
The suspension takes immediate effect, and the lawmaker will remain barred from legislative activities until the suspension period ends and the conditions set by the House are met.
