The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has rejected the decision of the party’s Board of Trustees to suspend former governor of the state, Sule Lamido. The state leadership described the move as unjust and called for its immediate reversal.
The party’s Board of Trustees had announced Lamido’s suspension over claims of anti-party activities and comments linked to recent internal disputes. The decision has since caused tension within the party in Jigawa State, raising concerns about growing divisions ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued in Dutse, the Jigawa State chairman of the party, Babandi Gumel, said the suspension was wrong and had sparked serious concern among party members. He noted that the action went against fairness, internal democracy, and ongoing efforts to reconcile aggrieved members.
The state chapter explained that Lamido’s actions were linked to his decision to seek legal redress after he was reportedly denied the chance to obtain a nomination form to contest the party’s national chairmanship. The party recalled that a Federal High Court in Abuja had restrained the PDP from holding its national convention until the matter was addressed.
According to the Jigawa PDP, suspending Lamido while the legal process is still ongoing amounts to pre-judgment and shows disregard for the rule of law. The party also stressed that Lamido is a founding member who has remained loyal and has never left the party.
The Jigawa chapter further argued that the party’s constitution does not allow the suspension of a life member of the Board of Trustees. It warned that such actions weaken unity and send a negative signal to committed members.
The party called on the Board of Trustees to withdraw the suspension without conditions, align with reconciliation efforts, and restore trust within the party. It added that the Jigawa PDP remains committed to a united, lawful, and democratic party structure.
