Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday said he possesses the experience and capacity required to lead Nigeria as president, amid growing talks about the 2027 general election.
Makinde made this known during a media session with selected journalists in Ibadan, where he spoke about his political and professional background. He explained that his years in public service and private business have prepared him for higher national responsibility.
The governor pointed to his tenure as Oyo State governor, noting that by May 2027 he would have completed two full terms in office. He said this experience places him on similar footing with past leaders who rose to the presidency after serving as state governors.
Makinde also spoke about his early career in the private sector, stating that he managed a company at a young age and worked with major international oil firms such as Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron. According to him, this exposure helped shape his leadership skills and understanding of governance beyond politics.
While expressing confidence in his ability to lead the country, Makinde said discussions about the 2027 presidential race were still premature. He added that Nigeria needs a healthy democracy with strong opposition parties.
The governor also criticised the growing wave of defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying such moves do not address the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians. He argued that political alignment alone cannot solve issues of hunger and public dissatisfaction across the country.
Makinde’s remarks have added to ongoing debates within the Peoples Democratic Party and the wider political space ahead of the next general election.
