Saidu Aliyu Mohammed has assumed office as the new Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority following a formal handover ceremony held on Tuesday. The event marked the end of Farouk Ahmed’s tenure as head of the Authority and the beginning of Mohammed’s leadership.
The handover ceremony brought together executive directors, senior officials, and staff members of the Authority. During the event, official documents and responsibilities were transferred to Mohammed, marking a smooth change in leadership in line with public service procedures.
The Authority announced the transition through its official social media platform, noting that the process reflected its commitment to continuity, accountability, and proper management of its regulatory responsibilities. The ceremony was conducted in an orderly manner to ensure stability within the organisation.
Ahmed stepped down from his position ahead of the end of his tenure. He was appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after the creation of the Authority under the Petroleum Industry Act. During his time in office, the NMDPRA handled key regulatory duties, including fuel supply management, pricing changes, licensing, and oversight of petroleum infrastructure, especially after the removal of petrol subsidy.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Mohammed as the new chief executive, and the appointment received approval from the National Assembly. Mohammed’s appointment comes at a time when the Federal Government is pushing reforms in the midstream and downstream petroleum sectors to improve energy supply, attract investment, and strengthen regulation.
Since its establishment, the NMDPRA has been responsible for regulating gas processing, transportation, and the distribution and retail of petroleum products following the breakup of the former Department of Petroleum Resources into two separate regulators. The Authority stated that the smooth transition would allow it to continue its work without disruption as it carries out its mandate across the petroleum value chain.
