The Igbo community in Sokoto State marked the 2025 Christmas celebration by visiting inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is being held.
The visit took place on Thursday as members of the community gathered at the facility to spend time with inmates and share food as part of a festive outreach. The group said the visit was carried out to spread kindness and unity during the Christmas season and to ensure that inmates were not left out of the celebration.
According to the community leaders, the decision to visit the correctional centre was inspired by the situation of Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently serving his sentence at the facility. They explained that instead of focusing on one individual, the group chose to extend the gesture to all inmates at the centre.
During the visit, meals were provided for the entire inmate population, estimated at about 1,300 people. Members of the Igbo community also spent time interacting with inmates, creating an atmosphere of togetherness and care within the prison.
The community said the outreach was guided by the Igbo belief in caring for one another and by shared human values that encourage support for people in difficult situations. They added that the visit was meant to bring comfort to inmates and remind them that they are not forgotten, especially during a festive period.
The group expressed hope that the gesture would help promote peace, unity, and goodwill within and beyond the prison walls, even after the Christmas season.
Nnamdi Kanu was moved to the Sokoto Correctional Centre following a court judgment delivered in November 2025. Justice James Omotosho sentenced him to life imprisonment on multiple terrorism-related counts. He also received additional jail terms on other counts, all without the option of a fine, after being found guilty on all charges.
