The leadership crisis in the Labour Party has taken a new turn as the National Working Committee led by Julius Abure cautioned Abia State Governor Alex Otti, his deputy Ikechukwu Emetu, and other party members against actions that could weaken the party. The warning followed reports of plans by another faction to organise a separate national convention and begin a fresh membership registration exercise.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said the move by the Nenadi Usman-led group to fix a convention date and roll out a nationwide mobilisation drive was not recognised by the party’s current leadership. He stated that such actions would not produce any valid outcome and would only add to the ongoing internal crisis.
According to the Abure-led committee, the existing leadership remains in place, and any attempt to set up parallel structures goes against the party’s rules. The committee maintained that it would rely on lawful means to defend its position and ensure that the party’s internal processes are respected.
The party leadership also criticised the role played by Abia State Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, noting that he had previously been involved in activities that affirmed the current national leadership. The committee described his involvement in a rival structure as inconsistent with party discipline.
The Labour Party leadership further said recent court decisions in similar political disputes had supported the need for parties to follow their internal procedures. It added that the Independent National Electoral Commission had also acted in line with this position.
The Abure-led group called on all aggrieved members to put the interest of the party first and work towards unity rather than deepening divisions. It warned that continued defiance of party rules would not be accepted, stressing that anyone seeking leadership positions must follow due process as outlined in the party’s constitution.
