The workers warned that failure to follow constitutional rules on fair representation could lead to unrest within the institution.
The protest was conveyed through a formal letter written by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, National Assembly chapter, and addressed to the Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission. The letter, dated December 22 and signed by the union’s chairman, Sabiyyi Sunday, was made available to journalists at the union’s office in Abuja.
In the letter, the workers referred to Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the Federal Character Commission Act, which require fair representation of all states and zones in public service appointments. The association complained that when vacancies arise in the secretary cadre, states that already have representation are often ch states in the same geopolitical zone are ignored.
The union stated that this pattern goes against the law and weakens trust in the appointment process. It urged the commission to ensure that future appointments follow constitutional guidelines to promote fairness across all states.
The workers also pointed to a recent action by President Bola Tinubu, who reversed the promotion of his Aide-de-Camp after public criticism, describing the move as an example of respect for due process. They asked the commission to apply the same standard in its decisions.
The association warned that continued disregard for the federal character principle could deepen feelings of bias and disrupt peace within the National Assembly workforce. It called on the commission to act quickly to address the issue, stressing that obedience to the law is necessary to maintain order and harmony in the Assembly’s administration.
