Delta PDP Says One-Party Rule Is Not an Option

The Peoples Democratic Party Caretaker Committee in Delta State has said Nigeria must not slide into a one-party system, insisting that democracy can only survive with a strong opposition.
The position was made known by the chairman of the committee, Prof. Sylvester Monye, in his New Year message to residents of Delta State at home and abroad. He said the country’s democratic system depends on respect for democratic rules and the independence of political parties.
Monye praised party leaders and members in the state for remaining loyal to the PDP despite challenges, noting that the new year offers a chance for reflection and renewed dedication to service. He said political actors must follow due process, internal democracy, and proper conduct, warning that actions taken now could shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
He also referred to ongoing legal matters involving the party, stating that past court rulings have made it clear that political parties should manage their internal affairs without unnecessary interference. He expressed confidence that the courts would continue to respect this position while handling pending cases.
According to him, despite differences in political views, the people of Delta State share a responsibility to maintain peace, unity, and steady development. He said the committee’s duty is to keep the PDP united and prepared to perform its constitutional role in a state long known as a PDP stronghold.
Monye urged party members to act with discipline and respect party rules, adding that the credibility of the PDP depends on how fair and transparent its internal processes are. He said the committee would continue consultations with stakeholders to ensure discussions remain focused on governance, development, and the rule of law.
He noted that 2026 is an important year ahead of the 2027 general elections and party primaries, stressing the need to reorganise and rebuild the party following recent defections. He added that the PDP in Delta State remains committed to constitutional values, orderly leadership, and preparing the ground for future party congresses.
