Rivers State lawmakers rejected a Christmas bonus of N100,000 that was credited to their accounts by Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Tuesday. The House of Assembly described the transfer as unauthorized and said public funds must follow proper procedures, including legislative approval. The money was returned immediately after the lawmakers received the alerts.
The lawmakers said similar bonuses for civil servants followed standard approval processes, making the transfer to legislators unusual. They accused the governor of regularly using state funds without the approval of the House, noting that such actions violate the state constitution. The House adjourned plenary until January 26, 2026, while the governor has not yet presented the 2026 budget or submitted names of commissioner nominees.
Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, visited Khana Local Government and warned residents to avoid repeating leadership mistakes in 2027. He stressed that political positions are not automatic and must be earned through effort and support from the people.
Wike also praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting Rivers communities through infrastructure projects, the establishment of the Federal University of Environment, and other initiatives. National and local leaders aligned with Wike, including Victor Giadom and Magnus Abe, affirmed support for his influence in the state. The Chairman of Gokana Local Government, Confidence Deko, pledged full backing for Wike’s leadership and promised cooperation with his initiatives.
Wike concluded by stating that unity between political parties and residents under the Renewed Hope Agenda will help move Rivers State forward and ensure continued development.
