The Interim leadership of the Labour Party, headed by Nenadi Usman, has confirmed its support for Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The party made this known through its Special Adviser on Media, Ken Asogwa, in a statement issued in Abuja.
The Labour Party stated that Obi had the party’s approval to participate in coalition discussions with the ADC, a process that began in May 2025. The party maintains that its initial backing remains unchanged even after Obi formally joined the ADC.
Labour Party officials reassured members across Nigeria that the party remains focused on reorganizing and strengthening its structures despite recent defections. They stressed that statutory bodies of the party would soon meet to chart a clear path forward and ensure the party regains momentum.
Efforts to revalidate and register members are already underway, aimed at revitalizing the party and attracting fresh energy. Party leaders believe these measures will position the Labour Party to return stronger, more united, and ready to play an active role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The statement also noted that while Obi transitions to the ADC, the Labour Party will continue its fight against efforts to create a one-party system in Nigeria, assuring members that the party’s stability and relevance will be restored.
The move signals a cooperative approach between the Labour Party and Obi as he pursues new political avenues while the party simultaneously rebuilds and refocuses on its long-term goals.
