The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has rejected allegations by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, that the agency is being used to target him and officials of his administration for political reasons. The anti-graft agency said it operates independently and does not take instructions from any political office holder.
The EFCC responded after Mohammed accused the commission of being influenced by political rivals, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to investigate members of his administration. The agency said it has been enforcing the law without bias and that ongoing cases against Bauchi State officials result from formal investigations rather than political interference.
The commission noted that Governor Mohammed’s claims of persecution were incorrect, reminding the public that he was previously under investigation for alleged money laundering before assuming office. The EFCC also stated that records of charges and court proceedings are publicly accessible, allowing citizens to verify the basis of its actions.
According to the EFCC, it continues to investigate and prosecute cases involving corruption and terrorism financing without regard to political affiliation. The agency urged the governor to focus on governance while it carries out its mandate of maintaining financial accountability and the rule of law.
