The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress has announced that it has withdrawn its support from Rivers State Governor Siminilayi Fubara and has chosen to align with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The decision was made public on Saturday during Wike’s visit to Okrika Local Government Area.
The chairman of the group, Senator George Sekibo, made the announcement while addressing supporters at the event. He said the disagreement between Governor Fubara and Wike was regrettable but insisted that the Ijaw people would always stand by those who had supported them. According to him, Wike played a major role in Fubara’s rise to power and had also worked for the interest of the Ijaw people across Rivers State.
Sekibo said the group decided to withdraw its backing from the governor and follow Wike because of the former governor’s past actions and support for the Ijaw people. He also assured Wike of the group’s loyalty and pledged full support for President Bola Tinubu and the federal government.
The chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, Akuro Tobin, also spoke at the gathering, describing Wike as his political benefactor. He said Wike had helped many people from the area secure political positions through elections and appointments. Tobin added that residents of the local government area stood firmly with Wike and President Tinubu.
Speaking on behalf of women in Okrika, Linda Stewart, who is the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, praised Wike for his support for women in politics and public service. She wished him success in his current and future roles.
In his response, Wike thanked the people of Okrika for their continued support and loyalty to the president. He urged them to keep supporting leaders who show good character and keep their promises. During the visit, Wike also paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Okochiri Kingdom, King Akete Tom, where he praised the monarch for maintaining unity among his people.
The minister hinted that plans had already been made for the 2027 elections but said details would be shared later. He advised the traditional ruler to avoid direct involvement in politics while continuing to guide the people when necessary.
