President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent the names of 21 nominees to the Senate for confirmation as board members of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The nominations were announced in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
For the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Senator Magnus Abe was nominated as board chairman. Abe is a former senator from Rivers South East, a past member of the NNPC board and the current head of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall. Two non-executive commissioners were also nominated. They are Engineer Paul Yaro Jezhi, a former Trade Union Congress chairman in Kaduna State, and Sunday Adebayo Babalola, a former deputy director at the Department of Petroleum Resources.
The President also named executive commissioners for the upstream regulator. The nominees include Muhammed Sabo Lamido for finance, Edu Inyang for exploration and acreage, Justin Ezeala for economic regulation and planning, Henry Darlington Oki for development and production, Indabawa Bashari Alka for corporate services and administration, and Mahmood Tijani for health, safety and environment. Olayemi Adeboyejo was nominated as secretary and legal adviser. Some of these officials previously served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, while others are new or were appointed earlier by President Tinubu.
For the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Adegbite Ebiowei Adeniji was nominated as board chairman. Adeniji is a lawyer with decades of experience in energy and natural resources and has served as a technical adviser on petroleum matters and as part of a World Bank oil and gas policy team. Other non-executive nominees are Kenneth Kobani and Asabe Ahmed.
Executive nominees for the midstream and downstream authority include Abiodun Adeniji for finance, Francis Ogaree for hydrocarbons, Oluwole Adama for gas infrastructure, and Mustapha Lamorde for corporate services and administration. Additional members named for the board are Yahaya Nasamu Yinusa for distribution systems, Adeyemi Murtala Aminu for corporate services, Modie Ogechukwu for economic regulation and planning, and Olawale Dawodu as secretary and legal adviser.
President Tinubu asked the Senate to act quickly on the confirmations. He also reminded the nominees of their duty to carry out their roles with care and competence, following the recent appointment of chief executives for both agencies, as the government seeks better control and order in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
