The Rivers Elders Council has declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 by aligning with the Renewed Hope Family initiative led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The endorsement was made during Wike’s visit to Akuku-Toru Local Government Area in Rivers State.
The chairman of the council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, announced the decision while receiving Wike during the visit. He said the Renewed Hope Family was the right political path for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, the state benefited from backing Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, a move he said helped sustain stability and progress in Rivers State.
Alabraba described Wike as a respected figure in modern Nigerian politics, noting his leadership style and ability to connect with people across age groups. He also stated that Rivers State is made up of many ethnic groups and that Wike promoted unity and peaceful coexistence during his time as governor.
The initiative, also known as the Rainbow Coalition, brings together members of the Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State. The aim is to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election without placing focus on party divisions.
The Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Major Jack, praised Wike for development projects carried out in the area while he was governor. He said the decision to support Tinubu in 2023 brought positive results and added that the same support would be given in 2027.
The lawmaker representing Akuku-Toru in the state assembly, Lolo Opuende, also pledged loyalty to Wike and said the people of the area would follow his political direction in the coming election. He stated that the community would stand with the Renewed Hope Family to back Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Council, Aboiya-a Bob-Fubara, commended Wike for his leadership approach and commitment to inclusive governance. He said the visit would strengthen grassroots leadership and assured continued support for Wike’s political direction in the area.
In his response, Wike said the visit was meant to appreciate the people for their support over the years, starting from when he declared his intention to contest for governor in 2014. He thanked them for joining the Rainbow Coalition and working together across party lines to support Tinubu’s return in 2027.
Wike explained that Rivers State remains unique in bringing together major political parties to work toward a common goal ahead of the next presidential election, adding that the focus has shifted from party loyalty to shared political objectives.
