Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has warned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) risks losing political relevance if it fails to field former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general election. Fayose made the statement during an interview on Arise Television.
Fayose argued that Obi is the most influential figure in the party and that other members lack the capacity to draw nationwide support. He noted that Obi’s political influence was evident during the 2023 elections when his candidacy with the Labour Party helped the party secure seats in the House of Representatives despite its limited national presence.
The former governor added that Obi’s appeal goes beyond party lines, suggesting that he would still attract strong support even if he contested under a different, less prominent party. Fayose clarified that he was not predicting the outcome of the 2027 election but warned that ADC would be in a weaker position if it does not present Obi as its candidate.
He described Obi as the central figure in the party, stating that sidelining him would reduce ADC’s relevance and political standing. Fayose maintained that the party’s fortunes in the upcoming elections largely depend on Obi’s involvement, and that without him, ADC risks being politically ineffective.
Fayose’s comments underline the importance of Obi to ADC as the party prepares for the 2027 general election, framing him as the candidate most likely to sustain the party’s national influence and electoral appeal.
