Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the arrest of northern activist Abubakar Salim Musa, saying the action reflects a growing effort by the federal government under President Bola Tinubu to silence dissenting voices in the country.
The activist was taken into custody after making public comments about worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria and other parts of the country. Amnesty International Nigeria reported that Musa was arrested over his views, describing the move as unlawful and without legal basis.
Reacting to the development, Atiku said Musa committed no crime, stressing that discussing insecurity is a right guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution. He faulted the authorities for choosing arrest instead of addressing the concerns raised by citizens about safety and governance.
Atiku also said the arrest was not an isolated case, adding that journalists, entertainers, students, and members of the National Youth Service Corps have allegedly faced harassment or detention for expressing opinions about the government or individuals linked to the presidency.
He warned that as the country approaches another election season, actions driven by fear and repression could weaken democracy and discourage public participation in politics. According to him, such practices could erode trust in democratic institutions and limit citizens’ willingness to speak freely.
The former vice president called for the immediate release of Musa and others detained for expressing their views. He also urged local authorities and the international community to pay attention to what he described as increasing pressure on freedom of expression in Nigeria.
