Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress.
The defection took place at the National Assembly complex, where Abba Abubakar formally announced his exit from the PDP and his entry into the APC. He also declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general election. Abba is the son of Atiku Abubakar, who was the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
At the event, Abba Abubakar was received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other senior APC figures from the North-East zone. He informed party leaders and supporters that his decision marked the end of his involvement with the PDP, a party he worked with during the last election cycle.
He explained that his move was based on his belief in the leadership direction of the APC and the current administration. He also instructed members and coordinators of his political group, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation, which he established in 2022, to leave the PDP and join the APC with immediate effect. According to him, the group would now work to support President Tinubu’s policies and plans.
APC National Vice Chairman for the North-East, Mustapha Salihu, welcomed Abba into the party and described the defection as a shift that shows growing acceptance of the ruling party across political lines. He said the APC remains open to new members and assured Abba of equal treatment and full participation within the party.
Senator Barau Jibrin also congratulated Abba Abubakar and assured him of support from the party leadership. He said the decision was driven by belief in the APC’s direction and the policies of the Tinubu administration. Barau added that Abba had been following political developments closely from abroad before returning to Nigeria to make his decision.
A presidential aide, Mahmoud Abdullahi, also spoke at the gathering and confirmed that President Tinubu welcomed Abba’s decision to join the APC. He encouraged Abba and his supporters to see the party as their new political home.
Representing the defecting group, Kano State coordinator Hon. Mubarak Musa said the move was carefully planned and that the group would now focus its political activities under the guidance of Senator Barau. He assured party leaders that they would work harder to support the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
The event ended with the announcement that Abba’s political structure had been renamed the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, marking a clear shift in loyalty and support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.
