The Rivers State House of Assembly did not resume its plenary session on Thursday, one week after adjourning its last sitting. The Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had earlier fixed January 15, 2026, for its return after its first sitting of the year.
During that earlier sitting, the lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu. The move followed allegations of gross misconduct, including the demolition of the Assembly complex and the approval of spending without legislative consent.
A visit to the Assembly complex around noon on Thursday showed no activity suggesting that lawmakers would reconvene. The House currently holds its sittings at the conference hall within its official quarters along Aba Road, following the demolition of its main complex.
As of the time of reporting, no statement had been issued to explain the absence of lawmakers or to announce a new date for plenary. Attempts to get clarification from the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or messages.
The delay has added to uncertainty surrounding the impeachment process, which has continued to draw public attention across the state and beyond.
