The Kogi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has asked the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission to extend the timetable for the upcoming local government elections. The party said it may approach the court if the commission refuses to adjust the schedule.
In a letter sent to the commission on January 19, 2026, the PDP chairman in the state, Muhammed Gambo, explained that long-running court cases over the party’s leadership made it impossible to meet earlier election deadlines. He stated that the issues have now been resolved and that the party is ready to take part fully in the election process if new dates are approved.
Gambo said the electoral commission has the authority under the Constitution and electoral laws to manage and adjust election schedules when necessary. He added that allowing an extension would promote fairness and allow all parties to compete properly in the polls.
The PDP chairman also said the party had not received any official communication from the commission since he took office. He warned that failure to consider the request could force the party to seek legal redress.
In its reply, the chairman of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission, Mamman Eri, said the commission could not grant the request because it would go against provisions of the Kogi State Electoral Law. He explained that several key deadlines had already passed, including the conduct of party primaries, the sale of nomination forms, and the submission of candidates’ names.
Despite the disagreement, the PDP leadership said it remains willing to cooperate with the commission and other stakeholders to ensure that the local government elections are conducted in a lawful and orderly manner across the state.
