All Progressives Congress chieftain, Abayomi Mumuni, cautioned the party against removing Vice President Kashim Shettima from President Bola Tinubu’s ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying such a move could weaken the party’s chances at the polls.
Mumuni spoke while reacting to growing debate within the party following the absence of Shettima’s photograph on a banner displayed at the North-East Zonal Public Hearing on the proposed amendment of the APC constitution. The incident sparked fresh talks about possible changes to the party’s presidential ticket in the next election cycle.
According to him, any attempt to replace the Vice President based on religious considerations would be politically risky. He argued that the northern region currently does not have a Christian politician with enough influence, voter base, and nationwide acceptance to deliver strong electoral support for the party.
He explained that Shettima remains a key part of the current political balance that helped the APC secure victory in the last election and that altering this arrangement could disrupt voter confidence. Mumuni added that removing the Vice President could affect party unity and weaken support across critical regions.
The APC chieftain also dismissed ongoing discussions about choosing a Christian running mate for President Tinubu in 2027, stating that such a strategy does not align with present political realities. He maintained that the party must be careful with decisions that could affect its ability to retain power.
As talks about the 2027 elections continue, Mumuni warned that wrong calculations in selecting candidates could damage the ruling party’s prospects and reduce its chances of securing another term in office.
