The Peoples Democratic Party has officially said its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election is open to all qualified aspirants from southern Nigeria. The party made the announcement following a meeting in Abuja, where leaders reviewed plans for the upcoming primaries. The gathering was held at the residence of a former vice president and brought together key PDP officials including the national chairman.
During the meeting, party leaders noted that while it is too early to say who will emerge as the party’s presidential candidate, the nomination process will be open to all eligible members from the South. This decision effectively clears the way for former President Goodluck Jonathan and other political figures from southern Nigeria to seek the nomination should they choose to run.
The PDP leadership said it is committed to conducting a primary exercise that is open, fair, and in line with party rules, allowing party members to choose their candidate freely. This comes as the party continues to position itself for the 2027 general election campaign.
Separately, party officials at the meeting welcomed a recent ruling by a Federal Capital Territory High Court that dismissed a legal challenge brought by a factional national secretary. The court’s decision was seen as reinforcing the authority of the Turaki‑led leadership as the party prepares for its nomination process and broader election activities.
