The Peoples Democratic Party has reacted to the killing of seven civilians during an attack on a mining site in Wat, Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area in Plateau State. The incident occurred on January 21, 2026, and drew strong condemnation from the opposition party two days later.
In a statement released on Friday by the party’s Plateau State Publicity Secretary, Choji Dalyop, the PDP described the attack as a tragic incident that claimed innocent lives. The party blamed the continued violence on weak security arrangements and said the failure to protect residents was unacceptable.
The PDP warned that repeated attacks across Plateau State were creating fear among residents and weakening trust in government. It said insecurity posed a serious risk to social order and democratic stability in the state.
The party referred to a fact-finding report commissioned in 2025 by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, which documented attacks on about 420 communities in Plateau State. According to the report, thousands of residents were displaced, while close to 12,000 people lost their lives over time. The findings also pointed to organised attacks involving people coming from neighbouring states.
Following the latest incident, the PDP called on authorities to carry out a full investigation into the killings and make the outcome public. It also urged the government to ensure those responsible are prosecuted and to put in place clear steps to stop further violence.
The party added that statements of sympathy without concrete action would not solve the problem. It stressed that citizens want justice, safety, and leadership that puts the protection of lives above politics.
The PDP said it stands with the families of those killed and the affected communities. It also appealed to both national and international bodies to keep watch on the rising insecurity and human rights situation in Plateau State and push for timely action.
