APC Flags Fly at Kano Govt House as Yusuf Returns

All Progressives Congress flags were raised on Monday at the Kano State Government House, showing the official return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party. The action came days after he resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party, ending months of talks and public debate over his political future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move confirms Yusuf’s plan to rejoin the APC, a party he previously belonged to between 2014 and 2018 before moving through other platforms. He was a key figure in the NNPP’s win in Kano during the 2023 elections but later decided to change course.
According to a statement from his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the governor’s decision was based on current demands of governance, national unity, and development needs. The statement added that closer ties with the Federal Government would help Kano State deliver better services and projects.
On Monday, Governor Yusuf is expected to formally register as an APC member along with 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state. He is also scheduled to launch the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano the same day.
Party preparations are already in place for his reception, with APC leaders awaiting the return of the party’s national leader, Abdullahi Ganduje, from London to welcome the governor in Kano. The development marks a major political shift in the state as the countdown to the 2027 elections continues.
