The Peoples Democratic Party has called on Nigerian courts to avoid involvement in its internal matters, warning that continued interference could damage public confidence in the judicial process. The party made this position known on Friday during a television interview.
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, spoke while reacting to recent court decisions involving the party. He said the judgments raised concerns about how far the judiciary should go in matters that are clearly internal party issues. According to him, there is no provision in the party’s constitution for a national caretaker arrangement, and this should guide any legal review.
He explained that while the PDP respects the courts and their authority, the judiciary should be careful not to cross the line into political roles. He noted that when public opinion begins to question the neutrality of the courts, it can weaken trust in the justice system.
Ememobong also referred to a recent public visit by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, where issues relating to land and housing for judges were discussed openly. He said such events, even when lawful, can create doubts in the minds of citizens, especially when political cases are later handled by the same system.
He added that the PDP was not accusing the courts of wrongdoing but was drawing attention to how public perception can affect the credibility of justice. He stressed that for justice to serve its purpose, it must not only be carried out properly but must also appear fair to the public.
The party maintained that protecting the independence of both political institutions and the judiciary is necessary to sustain confidence in democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria.
