Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress. The defection was announced and sealed at a public event in Jalingo, where Vice President Kashim Shettima welcomed him into the ruling party.
Receiving the governor, Shettima said the APC was formed as a platform for Nigerians focused on growth and progress. He described Kefas as a leader who understands the diversity of Taraba State and works to promote unity across ethnic and religious lines. He also urged residents of the state to continue supporting the governor as he carries out his duties.
The Vice President noted that Taraba remains an important part of the country with strong potential for growth and development. He added that the governor’s decision to join the APC aligns with the party’s vision of national development and cooperation.
Kefas had earlier announced plans to defect in December 2025 but postponed the move after a security incident involving students in Kebbi State. His formal entry into the APC in January followed weeks of consultations and preparation.
The National Chairman of the APC, Nentawe Yilwada, described the governor’s defection as a gain for the party and the state. He said the move would help place Taraba in a better position to benefit from national development efforts. He also assured party members that all stakeholders would be treated fairly.
In his response, Governor Kefas thanked the party leadership and the Federal Government for the reception. He said his decision was guided by the need to work with others to build a better future for Taraba State. He added that the move was about service and responsibility, not personal ambition.
The governor also expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and said Taraba State remains open to investors and development partners as his administration continues its work.
